X or Y ?????? Not just variables but theories of management.

Hello readers.
Let's understand a new interesting concept that i became aware about management styles in NITIE.
"Theory X & Theory Y"

This two theories are bases on which the whole management structure of organisation develops.
Theory X & Theory Y.

Theory X :
It is based on three basic assumptions:
  1. The average person inherently dislikes work and will avoid it if at all possible.
  2. Most people have to be coerced, controlled, directed and threatened to get them to work towards organizational goals.
  3. The average person prefers to be directed, avoids responsibility, isn't ambitious and simply seeks security.

  • Theory X managers tend to be autocratic and controlling.
  • These managers tend to  be extremely task oriented and not put much emphasis on building positive relationships.
  • People working for these managers tend to be motivated by fear and feel unappreciated.
Theory Y :
Theory-Y assumptions are:
1. Physical and mental effort are natural and most people (depending on the work    environment) find work to be a source of satisfaction.
2. They generally, on their own motivation, exercise self-control, self-direction, creativity, and ingenuity in pursuit of individual and collective (company) goals.
3. They either seek responsibility or learn to accept it willingly.
4. Their full potential is not tapped in most organizations.

  • Theory Y managers tend to be participative when making decisions, and value both results and relationships.
  • These managers tend to delegate and empower their people because they trust them and feel they will do good work (i.e., managers are "coaches").
  • Priorities will be given to developing positive work environments, and expressing regular recognition and appreciation.
  • These managers will also feel that people are important and worth developing.
People working for these managers tend to feel appreciated and dignified, and will generally have good morale and feel motivated.

Just on lighter side of things i came upon an interesting example on google :

This is nice perspective of looking at theory X & Y :D :D
Now as you might have got the feel of both the theories .Let us see what might be the possible scenarios :
1 - Theory X: Manager assumes LAZY workers as LAZY and makes them work .
2 - Theory X: Manager assumes NOT LAZY workers as LAZY and makes them work.
3 - Theory Y: Manager assumes LAZY workers as NOT LAZY and makes them work.
4 - Theory Y: Manager assumes NOT LAZY workers as NOT LAZY and makes them work.

You can conclude what will be result in scenario 2 & 3. Both the approaches will fail .
Hence i think both theories need to be used in an organisation depending upon the situation & workforce.

In Indian context most of the workers would have made career choice by chance & not by choice.Hence they wont be self motivated & hence theory X  scenario 2 would have to be applied more dominantly. But even in Indian context at top & middle management level Theory Y will have good effects in long term for an organisation.

In end I would like to share my experience.
I have worked under both type of managers in last 1.5 years and personally feel that my performance was better under Manager Y.

Theory X & Theory Y a new concept learned :)  :)

Craftsmanship to Modern management

Back in Serene NITIE campus after i missed first week of studies due to my notice period in company.
Hence Missed many lectures of Prof.Mandi. But read many blogs of my friends and hence understood what blogs can do.Why prof.encourages us to write blogs.

Even when i was not there in campus but i could understand some of the concepts that he taught by reading this blogs.
Lets begin with the concept that i tried to understand by reading other students blogs.

If we try to do any simple task singlehandedly most of the times we are able to do the task.
But for same task if we go & take help & advice of others than most of the times we end up being confused or we are not able to arrive at decision & hence not able to complete the task.
Also too many people doing single task result in not arriving at final decision as we are unable to do task in single direction as each person has his own thinking. This is concept of " To many cooks spoil the broth "
Also we are able to do a certain task by ourself  if it is simple & we get happy after doing that task due to personal satisfaction. This is concept of Craftsmen. a single person doing a specific work.

But if the task is complex we cannot do singlehandedly. We have to always do it in group.Like for scout guide we used to form a team & each one was assigned specific task in which he was more efficient.
Same thing applies in company scenario where there are complex processes involved. This is where concept of modern management comes in.Each manager is assigned a  specific task in which he excels. And the end it is necessary that there are not too many managers. This might happen at Middle management level. This needs to be avoided. This sums up example of Modern management.

Features of Craftsmanship :

No parallel working.
Mastery in one job.
Worker is the boss.
Satisfaction is more.

Features of Modern Management :

Parellel working is there.
Management is the boss.
A person becomes skilled or efficient in the smallest “element” of a big activity and time taken for doing that one small activity reduces and hence overall time for the whole activity reduces.
Satisfaction is less.

In end i would like to sum up that in today's world craftsman concept cannot be prevalent in today's complex company processes.Yes skilled labour will be required but under management structure.

Wonderful Journey Begins.......

Walking up the stairs at 8.50am .Cool breeze & great atmosphere in the Campus due to Mumbai Rains.By the way,I love rains. My MBA journey began.
Reached the class & settled down.Waiting for the first lecture.
Felt nice getting to learn in class room after doing job for around 20 months. That student feeling.Wow.
Than entered the professor .At beginning of class for me he was just another teacher but at the end of lecture he was one of the best i had came across. Mr.Mandi,a great lively teacher but from his teachings & thoughts  i think he is even a better human being.

I liked 2 things about him:

1.His way of teaching :
He is interactive teacher & always keeps students involved in classroom. He teaches about classroom concepts but  always with practical plane like he gave an example with help of our 2 classroom buddies about selling Butterfly.

2.His thoughts :
He taught me to not only think about doing MBA in NITIE but also about LIFE as whole from different angle. The way he told me to think about earning while studying reminded me of my engineering days when i used to earn some money by correcting 11-12 std test papers of private coaching classes. But i regretted that i only did it for few months & not whole engineering.Never the less i felt good for that.
He also told us not to be just another managers but also some1 who can bring somehing new to this world.

In first lecture itself this prof. has influenced the way i have been thinking about life.Hope the 2 yrs will be great.
The day went well with other profs. as well with introductions of students as well as subject as well as little bit of scoldings ;)
I am not going to attend the college for remaining week as my notice period is till 21 June.
This was first blog of my life & have written it only because of noble idea of Mr.Mandi of spreading knowledge through Blogs.
Hope we all have great life.

Cheers to Nitie & Cheers to Life.
