X or Y ?????? Not just variables but theories of management.

Hello readers.
Let's understand a new interesting concept that i became aware about management styles in NITIE.
"Theory X & Theory Y"

This two theories are bases on which the whole management structure of organisation develops.
Theory X & Theory Y.

Theory X :
It is based on three basic assumptions:
  1. The average person inherently dislikes work and will avoid it if at all possible.
  2. Most people have to be coerced, controlled, directed and threatened to get them to work towards organizational goals.
  3. The average person prefers to be directed, avoids responsibility, isn't ambitious and simply seeks security.

  • Theory X managers tend to be autocratic and controlling.
  • These managers tend to  be extremely task oriented and not put much emphasis on building positive relationships.
  • People working for these managers tend to be motivated by fear and feel unappreciated.
Theory Y :
Theory-Y assumptions are:
1. Physical and mental effort are natural and most people (depending on the work    environment) find work to be a source of satisfaction.
2. They generally, on their own motivation, exercise self-control, self-direction, creativity, and ingenuity in pursuit of individual and collective (company) goals.
3. They either seek responsibility or learn to accept it willingly.
4. Their full potential is not tapped in most organizations.

  • Theory Y managers tend to be participative when making decisions, and value both results and relationships.
  • These managers tend to delegate and empower their people because they trust them and feel they will do good work (i.e., managers are "coaches").
  • Priorities will be given to developing positive work environments, and expressing regular recognition and appreciation.
  • These managers will also feel that people are important and worth developing.
People working for these managers tend to feel appreciated and dignified, and will generally have good morale and feel motivated.

Just on lighter side of things i came upon an interesting example on google :

This is nice perspective of looking at theory X & Y :D :D
Now as you might have got the feel of both the theories .Let us see what might be the possible scenarios :
1 - Theory X: Manager assumes LAZY workers as LAZY and makes them work .
2 - Theory X: Manager assumes NOT LAZY workers as LAZY and makes them work.
3 - Theory Y: Manager assumes LAZY workers as NOT LAZY and makes them work.
4 - Theory Y: Manager assumes NOT LAZY workers as NOT LAZY and makes them work.

You can conclude what will be result in scenario 2 & 3. Both the approaches will fail .
Hence i think both theories need to be used in an organisation depending upon the situation & workforce.

In Indian context most of the workers would have made career choice by chance & not by choice.Hence they wont be self motivated & hence theory X  scenario 2 would have to be applied more dominantly. But even in Indian context at top & middle management level Theory Y will have good effects in long term for an organisation.

In end I would like to share my experience.
I have worked under both type of managers in last 1.5 years and personally feel that my performance was better under Manager Y.

Theory X & Theory Y a new concept learned :)  :)
